*** LESSONS ON GUN CONTROL FROM OUR POLITICIANS? REALLY? ***
If it's true that #history tends to repeat itself, then the images that have been animating our TV screens for the past couple of days – with the #Talibans marching on #Kabul and taking over #Afghanistan again at the end of a 20-years-long conflict against the #USA, #NATO and #ISAF forces – are a stark reminder of similar images that came from #Saigon back in 1975.
What's new this time is that we can take a look at what happens to government #arsenals every time that such a #takeover takes place.
The images you see attached to this post portray some of the stashes of weaponry and equipment that the #AfghanNationalArmy left behind for the #Taliban forces to grab: #M16 and #M4 assault rifles, #M249 #SAW and #M240 machine-guns, #M40A1 sniper rifles, and many others, now under terrorist control.
It's nothing new to us: as the National Shooting Sports Foundation | NSSF wrote back on August 4 (https://tinyurl.com/takkmhpj), in the past few years over 150.000 men deserted from the Mexican military and law enforcement to work with drug cartels, bringing their service weapons along with them – weapons often supplied by the #UnitedStatesGovernment, which now under the #BidenAdministration has turned into a #GunControl champion for civilians.
How long until those #firearms are used to commit a #terrorattack in #Europe or in the #US? How long until they end up in the hands of armed groups in #Africa or the #MiddleEast?
And when this happens, will our national governments, the #EU and other international entities tackle the problem properly, or will they rush to impose more red tape to #lawabidinggunowners?
Something tells us you already know the answer, particularly should our politicians take example from the Taliban themselves: down in Kabul, they're already going door-to-door to confiscate the #guns owned by common citizens (https://tinyurl.com/wrtvmp53).
Even under western occupations, Afghan citizens could own firearms to protect themselves, their loved ones, and their property. Now the Taliban have decided that "they don't need to defend themselves anymore". They probably fear armed resistance from civilians more than any resistance from the #ANA.
Back in 2015/2016, when the #EUGunBan was being discussed, one of the most interesting talking points that popped up was that – according to the #EU and #UN – generally speaking in Europe and worldwide over 99% of firearms owned by average citizens are surveyed, registered in some way, and always traceable.
The figure drops to a mere 70% when it comes to #firearms under government control – be them service #weapons used by the #Police or #military, or firearms under their control in some other way (eg. those kept in evidence lockers, those handed over by civilians who won't or can't keep them anymore, etc.).
Before they push for tighter controls over OUR guns, the #gungrabbers in positions of political power should consider establishing better controls over THEIR guns. We can control our own guns very well; they do not seem to be just as good.
