Man admits part in botched robbery

City resident shot accomplice

By Larry Fisher-Hertz

Poughkeepsie Journal

A City of Poughkeepsie man admitted in court Tuesday he took part in a botched robbery in which he shot and killed one of his fellow would-be robbers.

Speaking quietly as he addressed Dutchess County Court Judge Thomas J. Dolan, 21-year-old Rasham McClinton entered guilty pleas to first-degree manslaughter and first-degree assault, both felonies punishable by up to 25 years in prison.

McClinton told the judge he and three other city men were planning to rob a man identified as Stuart Scott. McClinton said he and his accomplices spotted Scott on South Bridge Street at about 2 a.m. May 1, 2001, and chased him toward his house.

When he saw Scott run up the porch stairs and try to go inside, McClinton said he opened fire with his 9 mm semiautomatic pistol, intending to shoot Scott.

Bullet hit accomplice

Under questioning in court Tuesday by Senior Assistant District Attorney Matthew Weishaupt, McClinton acknowledged a bullet from his gun struck one of his accomplices, Dennis Brown, in the head.

''I believe I caused the death of Dennis Brown,'' McClinton told Weishaupt.

Brown died the following day. Scott was wounded, but has since recovered.

Weishaupt said police believe McClinton and his accomplices decided to rob Scott after they spotted him wearing several pieces of gold jewelry.

''There was talk Mr. Scott had a lot of money, and they felt he was an easy mark,'' the prosecutor said.

During his plea, McClinton identified Brown as one of his accomplices and Shawn Jackson as another. Jackson admitted his part in the crime in proceedings before Dolan in July.

McClinton did not identify a fourth man prosecutors claim had taken part in the robbery attempt, 22-year-old Omnipotent Drayton. Drayton has been indicted on second-degree murder charges but has pleaded not guilty to the crime.

Weishaupt has said all four allegedly involved in the robbery were believed to have been members of the Poughkeepsie street gang Mad Drama.

In exchange for his guilty plea, McClinton was promised a sentence of no more than 15 years in prison. He remains jailed without bail pending sentencing, scheduled for Dec. 16.
