lara Posted November 9, 2006 at 11:37 AM Share Posted November 9, 2006 at 11:37 AM http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/north_yorkshire/4176275.stm An exhibition in a York cinema featuring pictures of children and firearms has provoked an outcry. Artist Noirin Carmody has created the series of pictures, which includes one featuring her young son blindfolded, with a gun pointing at his head. Ms Carmody said she wanted to reflect the fact that guns were in society, and to provoke emotion from visitors to the York City Screen exhibition. But some passers-by told BBC News they thought the images were not acceptable. One woman said the pictures were "horrible" whilst another said it seemed to "make fire arms acceptable to some degree". Another woman said it was "disgusting" and "certainly not art". Disturbing fact Defending her work Ms Carmody said: "These are fictionalised images that reflect on the reality that guns are in our society and are being used in our society. "That is the disturbing fact and not the art that reflects it." She said the picture house was the perfect venue for the exhibition as she was reflecting film and its portrayal of guns and gun culture. "I produced the work as a thought-provoking piece and I really believe it was important to use children in the images. "Guns are being used by young people in society. My son and daughter were happy to roleplay the fictional narrative in the images." City Screen manager Tony Clarke said the exhibition should be seen by as many people as possible. "It is important that the images go up so people can see the issues that are being addressed by the exhibition," he said.
